3 Reasons Your Furnace Keeps Turning Off in Chino, CA

Have you ever wondered why your furnace keeps turning off? This issue is common, and if it doesn’t get fixed immediately, it can result in a much higher electric bill. Here are some reasons the furnace in your Chino, CA, home keeps turning off.

Faulty Thermostat

The thermostat is what tells your furnace to turn on. If the thermostat is faulty, it would keep the furnace running. The cause of this problem could be several things, such as dead batteries or old wiring.

It could also be the position of the thermostat. For instance, if it’s near a heat source or direct sunlight, it could cause the thermostat to read incorrect temperatures. Lastly, if your thermostat is old, it’s time for an upgrade.

While you may change batteries yourself, leave the rest to a professional. Checking for wiring and finding the correct location for the thermostat is a job that requires expertise.

Restricted Airflow

If your furnace keeps turning off, it could be due to restricted airflow. Restrictions happen in the air ducts, and this restriction could be due to a dirty filter or even a dirty blower wheel.

The first step would be to check and replace your filters. Usually, industrial experts advocate for changing or cleaning your air filters at least once every month. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, you need the air ducts cleaned.

Ductwork may get blocked or clogged from dust debris, and as a result, it may reduce airflow. When this happens, the heat exchanger doesn’t get enough air and overheats, causing short cycles. If that’s not the reason, it’s likely that the blower wheel is dirty and needs furnace repairs.

Corroded or Dirty Flame Sensor

Frequent short cycles could be due to a dirty or corroded flame sensor. A flame sensor tells your HVAC system that there’s a flame when the gas valve opens. If it fails to notice the fire, it shuts off the system and prevents the gas from escaping into your house.

If it becomes corroded or accumulates dirt, it fails to register the flame and shuts off the system. To fix this problem, you need to contact your HVAC contractor immediately.

You don’t have to wait until your furnace breaks down in the middle of the cold fall or winter months. Take steps to prevent short-cycling by taking care of your furnace through professional maintenance. For more information on preventative maintenance, contact Metz Air Control.
